What is JPG to PNG Converter?
This tool converts JPG (JPEG) images to PNG in your browser. It is for anyone whose editor, website builder, design tool or assignment asks for PNG, or who wants to edit an image repeatedly without it degrading a little more each time it is saved.
Two things surprise people about this conversion, so they come first. It does not improve the picture: JPG is lossy, so the detail it threw away when the photo was saved is gone, and the PNG is a perfect copy of the JPG as it is — blockiness, blur and all. And it does not make the background transparent. A JPG has no transparency at all, so the PNG has exactly the same solid background the JPG had; white stays white. Removing a background is a separate job for an editing tool, and no format conversion does it.
What PNG does give you is lossless storage. From here on, the pixels are kept exactly: you can edit, crop and re-save the PNG as often as you like without adding the new compression damage that re-saving a JPG causes. PNG is also the format many tools expect for layers of a design, for screenshots and for images you will later add transparency to.
When you click Convert to PNG, each file's first bytes are checked for the JPEG signature (FF D8 FF). Files named .jpeg, .jpe or .jfif pass too, because they are the same format; a file that is really a WebP or PNG with a .jpg name is identified and named. The browser decodes the JPG, applying the orientation tag a phone or camera stored, so a photo that appeared sideways elsewhere is saved upright. The pixels are drawn onto a canvas of the same size and encoded as PNG. There are no quality settings, because PNG has no quality loss to tune.
Expect the PNG to be larger than the JPG — for a photo often three to ten times larger, since lossless storage of photographic detail takes far more bytes than JPG's compression. The results list shows each file's size before and after.
Everything happens on your device: the images are read into browser memory, converted and handed back as downloads, and never uploaded. You can confirm in your browser's developer tools (Network tab) that no request carries your file. Convert up to 50 images per batch, each up to 50 MB.
1. Each file's first bytes are checked for the JPEG signature FF D8 FF. .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe and .jfif files all pass; any other signature is rejected with a message naming the real format. 2. The browser decodes the JPEG with createImageBitmap, applying the EXIF orientation tag so the image is upright. 3. The decoded pixels are drawn onto a canvas of the same width and height — no resizing, no background added. 4. The canvas is encoded with canvas.toBlob("image/png"). PNG compression is lossless, so the PNG holds exactly the decoded JPEG pixels. 5. The file keeps its original name with the extension changed to .png, and the size before and after is shown.
| JPG | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy | Lossless |
| Transparency | No | Yes — but a converted JPG has none to carry over |
| Re-saving after edits | Loses a little more detail each time | No further loss |
| File size for a photo | Small | Several times larger |
| Best for | Photos to share or upload | Editing, screenshots, graphics, text |
Worked examples
- photo.jpg → photo.png, a lossless PNG with the same pixels and the same solid background; no warnings.
- scan.jpeg, download.jfif and IMG_0001.JPG → scan.png, download.png and IMG_0001.png: all three are JPEG files and convert the same way.
- saved.jpg whose bytes are actually a WebP → no conversion; the tool says the file is really a WebP and to use a WebP tool.
How to use JPG to PNG Converter
- Click "Choose JPG images", drop files onto the box, or paste an image with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac). Up to 50 at once.
- Click "Convert to PNG". Each image is converted in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
- Click Download next to each PNG, or "Download all (.zip)" for every file in one archive.
Common errors
- The background is not transparent — expected: a JPG has no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same solid background. Remove the background in an image editor; converting formats cannot do it.
- The PNG looks no better than the JPG — correct: PNG preserves the JPG's pixels exactly, but it cannot restore detail the JPG's compression already removed.
- The PNG is much bigger than the JPG — expected: PNG stores every pixel losslessly. If size matters more than editing, keep the JPG.
- "… is actually a WebP file, not JPG" (or PNG) — the file has the wrong extension. Use the converter for the format named in the message.
- "… is empty (0 bytes)" — the file did not finish downloading. Get it again and retry.
- "Your browser could not encode an image this large" — the photo exceeds the device's canvas limit (about 16.7 megapixels on iPhone and iPad). Use a desktop browser or resize it first.
FAQ
How do I convert JPG to PNG for free?
Drop the JPG on this page, click "Convert to PNG" and download the result. It is free, has no watermark or sign-up, and works in any modern browser on a computer or phone.
Does converting JPG to PNG make the background transparent?
No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG keeps exactly the same solid background. Making a background transparent means removing it in an image editor, which is a different task from changing the file format.
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. The PNG is a lossless copy of the JPG as it is, so detail lost to JPG compression stays lost. What PNG adds is that no further quality is lost when you edit and save it again.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the JPG?
PNG stores every pixel exactly, while JPG throws away detail to save space. For a photo, the lossless PNG is often three to ten times larger.
Can I convert JPEG and JFIF files to PNG too?
Yes. .jpeg, .jpe and .jfif files are all the same JPEG format and convert exactly like .jpg files.
Are my photos uploaded when I convert JPG to PNG here?
No. The conversion runs in your browser and your photos never leave your device. You can check in the Network tab of your browser's developer tools that no request carries them.
Will my phone photo come out rotated?
No. The orientation tag your phone saved is applied while decoding, so the PNG is stored upright and displays the same way in every app.
