What is Add Watermark to PDF?

This tool draws a text watermark onto the pages of a PDF and gives you a new file. It is for the everyday marking job: stamping "CONFIDENTIAL" or "DRAFT" across a document before sharing it, putting a client or company name faintly behind each page of a proposal, adding a date or reference number to a scan, or laying a repeating pattern across pages to make a copy traceable.

The watermark is one line of text. You set the words, the font (Helvetica or Helvetica Bold), the size (6–200 pt), the colour, how see-through it is (0–100%), the angle, and where it goes. The angle is a preset: Diagonal (45°), Horizontal or Vertical. Vertical text is rotated 90° counter-clockwise, so it reads from the bottom of the page upwards, as a right-hand margin note would. Placement is either one watermark in the middle of the page or a tiled grid of them repeated across it; the tiles are sized and centred so the pattern covers the page symmetrically and no two marks overlap.

Pages can be the whole document or a list you type, such as "1-3, 5" or "2-" for page 2 to the end. The mark is drawn at a chosen opacity, so a faint watermark sits behind the text rather than over it; set the opacity higher when you want it to stand out, or lower when it must not obscure the words underneath.

The watermark is drawn INTO the page content, not added as a removable annotation. There is no watermark object in the PDF format for a reader to switch off, and it is not a field a viewer can select and delete. That is also why a watermark is a visual mark, not security: it does not prevent copying, editing, screenshotting or printing, and anyone who can open the PDF can take the text underneath it, or cover it up. If you need access control, use encryption and permissions in a PDF application; a watermark only signals intent and deters casual reuse. It is honest to say so, and this tool does.

Because the mark is placed relative to the page as a reader sees it, the tool accounts for a page's /Rotate setting and its crop box: on a page the viewer turns sideways, an "Horizontal" watermark still reads upright and is centred on the visible page, not thrown off the edge.

Two cautions. First, an encrypted or permission-locked PDF is refused with a clear message, because its streams cannot be safely rewritten here; open it in a PDF reader with its password and save or print an unprotected copy, then watermark that. Second, saving rewrites the file, so a digital signature stops validating — the signature covers the file's exact original bytes. Watermark a document before signing it, or accept that the signature will no longer check out in the watermarked copy.

Everything runs in your browser: the PDF is read, watermarked and saved inside the tab, and the file never leaves your device. You can confirm in your browser's developer tools, on the Network tab, that no request carries your document. Files up to 200 MB are accepted, because the whole file is held in the tab's memory while it is edited.

1. The file's first bytes are checked for the PDF signature, then pdf-lib opens it; a damaged or encrypted file is refused with a specific message and the page count is read. 2. The settings are validated: a non-empty watermark line (whitespace runs are collapsed to single spaces), a font size between 6 and 200 pt, an opacity between 0 and 1, a #rrggbb colour, one of the three angles, one of the two placements, and one of the two built-in fonts. 3. The pages to watermark are all pages, or the list you typed (numbers, ranges like 2-6, and 8- for page 8 to the end), checked against the page count. 4. The chosen font is embedded and every character of the watermark is tested against it; the first character the font cannot encode is named in the error, before any page is touched. The built-in fonts encode WinAnsi (basic Latin) only. 5. The watermark's width is measured with the font, and its vertical offset is chosen so the middle of the glyph box (ascender to descender) sits on the placement point rather than the baseline. 6. For each page, the visible area and rotation are read from its /MediaBox, /CropBox and /Rotate, giving view space — the page as displayed, origin at the top-left of the visible area, y increasing downwards. 7. A matrix turns the text frame by the chosen angle and places it at the chosen point in view space, and that matrix is composed with the page's view-to-user-space matrix. The result is passed to the `cm` operator, so the text is angled and centred relative to what the reader sees, whatever the page's rotation or crop box. 8. Opacity is applied by registering an extended graphics state (with the `ca` alpha) and emitting `gs`; the whole mark is wrapped in a graphics-state save/restore (`q` … `Q`) so the transparency and transform cannot leak onto the rest of the page. For a tiled placement the grid step is the mark's rotated bounding box plus the larger of one font size and 12 pt of clearance, and the grid is centred on the page. 9. The document is saved as <name>-watermarked.pdf with pdf-lib. Your original file is not changed.

Diagonal vs Horizontal vs Tiled
 LayoutHow it readsBest for
Diagonal (45°)Angled across the page, from bottom-left to top-rightThe classic "CONFIDENTIAL"/"DRAFT" stamp; catches the eye without hiding a line of text
HorizontalUpright, left to rightA footer or header note, a title, or a short name centred on the page
VerticalTurned 90° counter-clockwise; reads bottom to topA subtle side note or a mark along a margin
TiledA repeating grid of the same text across the pageMaking copying harder to miss — a "SAMPLE" or "DO NOT COPY" pattern

Worked examples

  • report.pdf (12 pages), text "CONFIDENTIAL", Diagonal, 48 pt, grey #808080, 20% opacity, One in the centre, all pages → report-watermarked.pdf. On a US Letter page the mark is 352.03 pt wide and sits centred at (306, 396) in the page's user space, angled 45°.
  • The same page with the Horizontal layout → the watermark's matrix is 1 0 0 1 306 396, i.e. upright and centred on a 612 × 792 pt page.
  • A 600 × 800 pt page that is displayed turned 90° (Rotate 90) → the displayed page is 800 × 600, so its centre is (400, 300) in view space and the Horizontal watermark's matrix is 0 1 -1 0 300 400. Without the rotation handling the text would come out sideways and off-centre.
  • Tiled "CONFIDENTIAL" at 24 pt Horizontal on US Letter: the mark is 176.02 pt wide, one font size (24 pt) of clearance gives a 200.0 × 46.2 pt step, so the page takes 4 columns × 18 rows = 72 watermarks, centred as a block.
  • Pages "2-" on a 12-page file → pages 2 to 12 are watermarked and the cover page is left exactly as it was.
  • "CONFIDENTIAL" in 48 pt Helvetica is 352.032 pt wide and stands 34.464 pt above its baseline — the measurements used to centre it and to size the tiled grid.

How to use Add Watermark to PDF

  1. Click "Choose a PDF" or drop a PDF onto the box. The page count appears next to the file name.
  2. Type the watermark text and choose the font, size, colour and opacity.
  3. Pick a layout (Diagonal, Horizontal or Vertical) and a placement (One in the centre or Tiled across the page).
  4. Choose All pages or Selected pages (type a list such as 1-3, 5), click "Add watermark", then "Download" to save <name>-watermarked.pdf.

Common errors

  • "Type the watermark text first — the box is empty." — the text box has nothing in it (or only spaces). Type a short phrase such as "CONFIDENTIAL", a name or a date.
  • "Font size must be between 6 and 200 pt — 250 pt is outside that range." — choose a size between 6 and 200 points. A blank box says "a blank value" in the same message.
  • "Opacity must be between 0 and 1 — 1.5 is outside that range." — the opacity is a fraction from 0 (invisible) to 1 (fully solid); the slider shows it as 0–100%.
  • "red" is not a colour — use a hex colour such as #808080, or choose one of the presets." — pick one of the colour presets, or enter a #rrggbb value.
  • "slant" is not a watermark angle. Choose diagonal (45°), horizontal or vertical." — choose one of the three layout buttons.
  • "middle" is not a watermark placement. Choose centre (one watermark) or tiled (repeated across the page)." — choose one of the two placement options.
  • "comic" is not one of the built-in fonts. Choose Helvetica or Helvetica Bold." — the tool offers only the two built-in PDF fonts.
  • "The watermark text contains "中", which the built-in fonts cannot draw." — the built-in fonts cover basic Latin (letters, digits and punctuation) only. Remove emoji, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Cyrillic and other scripts, or replace them with ordinary characters.
  • "Page 9 does not exist — this PDF has 6 pages." — the page list has a number past the end of the document. Correct the list.
  • "… is actually a JPG file, not PDF." — the file is an image with a .pdf name. Use JPG to PDF first if you want it as a PDF.
  • "… could not be read — the PDF is damaged or incomplete." — the download did not finish or the file is corrupt. Download it again, or open it in a PDF reader and save a fresh copy.
  • "… is encrypted (password-protected or locked against editing), so its pages cannot be copied." — open the PDF in a reader with its password, save or print an unprotected copy, then watermark that.

FAQ

How do I add a watermark to a PDF?

Drop the PDF here, type the watermark text, and choose the font, size, colour, opacity, angle and placement. Click "Add watermark" and a watermarked copy downloads as <name>-watermarked.pdf; your original file is not changed.

Can I add a watermark without uploading my PDF?

Yes. The file is opened, watermarked and saved entirely inside your browser tab — nothing is uploaded and no request carries the document. You can confirm this on the Network tab in your browser's developer tools. Files up to 200 MB are accepted.

Is the watermark secure — can it be removed?

No, it is not security. The watermark is drawn into the page content, so it is not a removable annotation and an ordinary reader cannot switch it off — but it does not prevent copying, editing, screenshotting or printing, and anyone determined to remove it can cover or crop it. Treat it as a visual mark that states your intent, not as copy protection.

Where does the watermark sit on the page?

Choose "One, in the centre" for a single mark in the middle, or "Tiled across the page" for a repeating grid that covers the page. The mark is placed relative to the page as the reader sees it, so a rotated page still gets an upright, centred watermark.

Can I watermark only some pages?

Yes. Choose Selected pages and type a list such as 1-3, 5, or 2- to mark everything except the first page. The pages you leave out are not touched.

Which fonts and colours can I use?

Two built-in PDF fonts: Helvetica and Helvetica Bold, at 6 to 200 points, in any colour you can express as a #rrggbb value (with presets for grey, red, blue, green and black). The built-in fonts cover Latin letters, digits and punctuation. Emoji and other scripts cannot be drawn with them and are refused with a message naming the character, rather than appearing as blank boxes.

How do I make the watermark faint so it does not hide the text?

Lower the opacity. At 100% the mark is solid; at 20% it is a light tint that sits behind the words. As a rule, use a grey or coloured mark at 10–30% over body text, and a stronger mark only over blank space or images.

Will adding a watermark break my PDF or its signature?

The pages are not re-rendered or recompressed, and bookmarks, links, form fields and metadata are kept — the mark is added on top of each chosen page. One thing cannot survive any edit: a digital signature stops validating, because it covers the exact bytes of the original file. Watermark a document before signing it, or accept that the signature will no longer be valid.

Can I watermark a password-protected or encrypted PDF?

No. An encrypted or permission-locked PDF is refused with a message, because the library used here cannot safely rewrite it. Open the file in a PDF reader with its password, save or print an unprotected copy, and watermark that.

Can I remove the watermark afterwards?

Not with this tool — the mark is drawn into the page. Keep your original file and watermark a fresh copy each time; the file you dropped in is untouched, so you can always start again from it.

Methodology

The watermark is one line of text drawn into each chosen page's content stream (PDF 32000-1 §9), inside a graphics-state save/restore (`q` … `Q`, §8.4.4) so its transform and transparency cannot affect the rest of the page. The angle and position are written with the `cm` matrix operator (§8.3.3): the text frame is turned by the chosen angle and placed in view space — the page as displayed, origin at the top-left of its visible area — and that matrix is composed with the page's view-to-user-space matrix, derived from its /MediaBox, /CropBox and /Rotate (§7.7.3.3, §14.11.2). Opacity is applied through an extended graphics state's non-stroking alpha (`ca`, §11.6.6), because text is filled rather than stroked. Text is measured with the embedded font's own metrics, and the baseline is offset by half the ascender-to-descender box so the mark's visual centre, not its baseline, sits on the placement point. Only the two built-in fonts are offered, and they encode WinAnsi (basic Latin) text; a character outside that set is detected before anything is drawn and refused by name. Encrypted PDFs are refused. The file is re-saved by pdf-lib, so its internal layout and byte size can differ from the original, and a digital signature stops validating. Files up to 200 MB are accepted.
