What is PDF Editor?

This PDF editor lets you add things on top of the pages of an existing PDF — text, pictures, white-out boxes, rectangles, highlights, freehand drawing and signatures — and save the result as a new PDF, without uploading the file anywhere. It is for the everyday jobs: filling in a form that has no fillable fields, adding a note or a date, covering an old phone number and typing the new one, highlighting a clause, or signing a letter.

It is an overlay editor, and that is the honest answer to the question most people have: it cannot change text that is already in the PDF. A PDF stores text as positioned glyphs, not as paragraphs, so reliable in-place rewording needs the original document. What you can do is cover the old words with White-out and type the replacement on top. White-out hides content visually only — the covered text stays in the file and can still be selected, copied or extracted, so never use it to hide confidential information.

How it works: pdf.js renders only the page you are looking at, at your screen's resolution, so even long documents stay light. Everything you add is kept in page points (1/72 inch) measured from the top-left of the page as it is displayed, which keeps placement correct on rotated pages and on pages whose coordinates do not start at zero. When you click Save PDF, pdf-lib opens the original file, leaves each page's existing content untouched and draws your additions after it: text as real text in an embedded font, images embedded once however often they are placed, and shapes and drawings as vector paths. Links, bookmarks, form fields and metadata are saved as they were.

Text uses the open-source Noto Sans fonts, fetched from this site only when you type: Latin (including accented letters), Greek and Cyrillic, plus Arabic, Hebrew and Devanagari (Hindi, Marathi, Nepali). Only the characters you use are embedded. Right-to-left lines are ordered with the core rules of the Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm and right-aligned; the box on screen is drawn from the same glyphs that go into the file, so what you see is what you get. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai and emoji are not bundled — load your own .ttf or .otf font for those. Arabic, Hebrew and Devanagari look right, but copying them back out of the saved PDF may give scrambled characters.

Limits: one PDF up to 200 MB, images (PNG or JPG) up to 25 MB, your own font up to 30 MB, up to 2,000 added items, 5,000 characters per text box and font sizes from 4 to 200 pt. Password-protected or permission-locked PDFs are refused rather than saved broken. If the PDF carries a certificate-based digital signature, you are warned first: saving any change rewrites the file, so that signature stops validating.

Your PDF never leaves your device. It is read into the page, edited there and handed back as a download. You can check in your browser's developer tools: open the Network tab, edit and save, and no request carries your document (the page does load its own scripts, fonts and analytics, which never include your file).

1. The file's first bytes are checked for the PDF signature, then pdf-lib opens it: an encrypted file is refused, and each page's visible area (CropBox clipped to MediaBox, as pdf.js does) and /Rotate value are read. 2. pdf.js renders the current page at the displayed width × device pixel ratio (capped at 16 million pixels), and nothing else. 3. Each item you add is stored in page points from the top-left of the page as displayed. Text is laid out with fontkit using the bundled Noto fonts chosen per character by script; right-to-left runs are ordered with the core Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm rules (P2–P3, W1, W7, N1–N2, I1–I2, L1–L2). The preview draws the resulting glyph outlines. 4. On save, every item is drawn after the page's original content inside its own graphics state, through a matrix that maps display coordinates to the page's own coordinate system for rotations of 0°, 90°, 180° or 270° and any page origin. 5. Text is written with subset-embedded fonts, JPG and PNG images are embedded once each (JPG orientation tags respected), white-out and rectangles are filled or stroked paths, highlights use multiply blending at 40% opacity, and drawings are smoothed Bézier curves. The file is saved as <name>-edited.pdf.

Worked examples

  • report.pdf, text "Hello Wörld" at 20 pt placed 50 pt from the left and 60 pt from the top of page 1 → report-edited.pdf, with the text's baseline 81 pt from the top (60 + 1.05 × 20) and the original page text still there.
  • A page with /Rotate 90 → text typed at the top-left of the page as you see it is saved upright at that spot, not turned sideways.
  • The Arabic line "السعر 25 دينار" → laid out right to left (السعر first, at the right), with the number 25 kept left to right between the two words.
  • Typing "Hi 你好" → refused with "The built-in fonts cannot draw these characters: 你 好." — load your own .ttf or .otf font that contains Chinese characters.
  • locked.pdf with a password → not opened: "locked.pdf" is encrypted (password-protected or locked against editing), so it cannot be edited here.

How to use PDF Editor

  1. Click "Choose a PDF" or drop a PDF onto the box. The first page appears; use the arrows or the page list to move between pages.
  2. Pick a tool: Text (tap where the text should start, then type in the Text box), Image, Signature, White-out, Rectangle or Highlight (drag over the area), or Draw.
  3. Select any item to move it, drag a corner to resize it, change its colour or size, use "Copy to all pages", or press Delete. Undo and Redo are in the top bar (Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y).
  4. Click "Save PDF", then "Download" to save <name>-edited.pdf.

Common errors

  • "… is encrypted (password-protected or locked against editing), so it cannot be edited here" — open the PDF in a reader with its password, save or print an unprotected copy, and edit that.
  • "The built-in fonts cannot draw these characters: …" — the text contains Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, emoji or another script without a bundled font. Click "Use your own font…" and choose a .ttf or .otf font that has those characters.
  • "A text box on page 2 is empty — type some text or delete it." — a text box has no text; type something or delete it before saving.
  • "… is actually a PNG file, not PDF" — the file is an image with a .pdf name. Use PNG to PDF (or JPG to PDF) first.
  • Old text still shows through, or can still be copied, after White-out — White-out only covers; set its colour to match the page if it is not white, and remember the covered text is still in the file.
  • "… is a font collection (.ttc), which cannot be embedded" or "… is a web font (WOFF)" — use a single .ttf or .otf file of the font.

FAQ

Can I edit the existing text in a PDF with this editor?

No. It adds new content on top of the pages; it cannot reword or reflow text that is already in the PDF. To change a word or a line, cover it with White-out and type the new text over it with the Text tool.

How do I add text to a PDF for free without uploading it?

Open the PDF here, choose Text, tap where the text should go and type it in the Text box; set the size, colour and bold as needed. Click "Save PDF" — the file is edited in your browser and downloaded directly, never uploaded.

Does White-out really remove the text underneath?

No. White-out draws an opaque box over the page, so the text is hidden when you look at or print the page, but it is still stored in the file and can be selected, copied or extracted. To remove information for real, use a dedicated redaction tool.

Is it safe to edit confidential PDFs with this online PDF editor?

Yes. The PDF is processed entirely in your browser tab and is never sent to a server. You can confirm it in your browser's developer tools under Network: no request contains your document.

Can I add Arabic, Hebrew or Hindi text to a PDF?

Yes. Arabic, Hebrew and Devanagari text is shaped with the bundled Noto fonts and right-to-left lines are ordered and right-aligned; the preview shows exactly what will be saved. Vowel marks may sit slightly differently than in a word processor, and copying such text back out of the PDF may give scrambled characters.

Will the PDF lose quality or its links and form fields when I save?

No. The original pages are not re-rendered: their text, images, links and form fields are kept, and your additions are drawn on top. Fillable form fields and comments are displayed above anything you add, so a white-out box will not hide them.

Does this PDF editor work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It runs in the phone's browser and works with touch: tap to place text, drag to draw or move items, and use Zoom to work on small details. Nothing needs to be installed.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes: one PDF up to 200 MB, images up to 25 MB each and your own font up to 30 MB. The limits keep the browser tab from running out of memory, because everything happens on your device.

Methodology

Exact: page placement on any page size, rotation and coordinate origin (tested against pdf.js); the original page content, links, bookmarks, form fields and metadata, which are saved untouched; JPG images are embedded byte for byte and PNG images losslessly. Approximate: text is set without kerning and without OpenType mark positioning, so Arabic, Hebrew and Devanagari vowel marks can sit slightly off; mixed right-to-left and left-to-right lines follow the core bidi rules but not explicit embeddings, isolates or bracket pairing. Not supported: editing existing text, removing content (White-out only covers), bold for Arabic, Hebrew and Devanagari, and Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai or emoji without your own font. Copying added Arabic, Hebrew or Devanagari text out of the PDF may give scrambled characters. Saving rewrites the file, so an existing certificate-based digital signature stops validating; encrypted PDFs are refused.
