What is Merge PDF?

Merge PDF combines several PDF files into a single PDF, in the order you choose, without sending them anywhere. It is for anyone who needs one file where they have several: a job application with a CV, cover letter and certificates, a set of scanned receipts for an expense claim, or chapters exported separately that belong in one document.

The merge runs in your browser with pdf-lib, an open-source PDF library written in JavaScript. Each file is opened and checked, then its pages are copied, one file after another, into a brand-new PDF. A page is copied as it is — its text, fonts, images and vector drawings are not re-rendered or recompressed — so text stays selectable and searchable and images keep their exact quality. Each page keeps its own size and rotation, which means an A4 letter, a US Letter form and a landscape slide can sit in the same file, each page at its original dimensions. Web links on the pages keep working, and a link that jumps to another page of the same file is re-pointed at that page in the merged document.

Some things belong to a document rather than to its pages, and those are not carried over. The merged file has no bookmarks (the outline panel), because each original outline points into its own file. Fillable form fields still show what was typed into them, but they are no longer a working form. Files attached to the whole document, accessibility tags and digital signatures are dropped — a signature could not stay valid anyway, because signing covers the exact bytes of the original file. Title and author metadata is not copied; the new file lists AllUtil as the software that produced it.

Password-protected and permission-locked PDFs are refused with a clear message rather than merged into a file with blank or broken pages: the library cannot decrypt them. Open such a file in a PDF reader with its password, save or print an unprotected copy, and merge that. Up to 100 files can be merged at once, each up to 200 MB and 500 MB in total — everything happens in your device's memory, so those limits are about keeping the browser tab from crashing.

Nothing is uploaded. The files are read into the page, merged there and handed back to you as a download. You can confirm it in your browser's developer tools: open the Network tab, merge some files, and no request carries your PDFs (the site does load its own scripts and analytics, which never include your files). That matters for exactly the documents people merge most — contracts, bank statements, ID scans and medical records.

1. Each file's first bytes are checked for the PDF signature (%PDF-), so an image renamed to .pdf is named as what it really is before any work starts. 2. Each PDF is opened with pdf-lib. A file whose trailer declares encryption is refused, and a file that cannot be parsed is reported by name as damaged. 3. Internal links are prepared: a link's target page is recorded by position (named destinations are looked up first), and back-references from annotations to their page are removed, so copying one page never drags in hidden copies of others. 4. All pages of each file are copied, in queue order, into a new PDF with pdf-lib's copyPages. Page size, crop box and rotation are copied with the page, including values the page inherits from its document. 5. Links are re-pointed at the copied pages, the document is saved with compressed object streams, and you download merged.pdf.

Worked examples

  • a.pdf (2 A4 pages) + b.pdf (1 US Letter page) + c.pdf (3 A5 landscape pages) → merged.pdf with 6 pages in that order, each at its original size.
  • The same two files in reverse order in the queue → the merged pages come out in reverse order too: the queue order is the page order.
  • A page rotated 90° in its original file → still rotated 90° in merged.pdf.
  • scan.pdf that is really a JPG → no merge; the tool says the file is actually a JPG and to use a JPG tool (for example JPG to PDF).
  • One file only → nothing to merge: the "Merge PDF" button stays disabled until a second PDF is added.

How to use Merge PDF

  1. Click "Choose PDF files" or drop your PDFs onto the box. Add more with "Add more PDFs" — up to 100 files.
  2. Put the files in order with the up and down arrows; remove any file with its × button. Files are merged top to bottom.
  3. Click "Merge PDF". The files are combined in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
  4. Click "Download" to save merged.pdf.

Common errors

  • "… is encrypted (password-protected or locked against editing)" — the PDF has a password or permission lock, and its pages cannot be copied. Open it in a PDF reader, save or print an unprotected copy, and merge that instead.
  • "… is actually a JPG file, not PDF" — the file is an image with a .pdf name. Convert it with JPG to PDF (or PNG to PDF) first, then merge.
  • "… could not be read — the PDF is damaged or incomplete" — the download did not finish or the file is corrupt. Download it again, or open it in a PDF reader and save a fresh copy.
  • The "Merge PDF" button is greyed out — only one file is in the list, and merging needs two or more. Add another PDF, or use Split PDF to work with pages inside a single file.
  • "… over the 200.00 MB limit" or "over the 500.00 MB limit for one merge" — the files are too large to merge safely in browser memory. Merge them in smaller batches, or compress the biggest files first.
  • The bookmarks are gone — expected: each original outline points into its own file, so the merged PDF is saved without bookmarks. Add them again in a PDF editor if you need them.

FAQ

How do I merge PDF files without uploading them?

Use a merger that runs in your browser, like this one. Choose your PDFs, set the order and click "Merge PDF" — the files are combined on your own device and the result is downloaded directly, so they never reach a server.

Is it safe to merge confidential PDFs here?

Yes. The files are never uploaded: they are read and merged inside your browser tab and disappear when you close it. You can check this in your browser's developer tools under the Network tab — no request contains your documents.

How do I combine PDF files on Windows, Mac or iPhone?

Open this page in any modern browser — Edge or Chrome on Windows, Safari or Chrome on a Mac, Safari on iPhone or iPad — choose the files and click "Merge PDF". Nothing needs to be installed, and on an iPhone you can pick PDFs from the Files app.

Will merging PDFs reduce the quality?

No. Pages are copied as they are, not re-rendered or recompressed, so images keep their exact quality and text stays selectable and searchable. The merged file is usually about the size of the originals added together.

Can I change the order of the files before merging?

Yes. Use the up and down arrows next to each file; the files are merged from top to bottom. To reorder or remove individual pages inside a file, use Split PDF first.

Why can't I merge a password-protected PDF?

Its pages are encrypted, and the library this tool uses cannot decrypt them, so merging would produce blank or broken pages. Open the file with its password in a PDF reader, save or print an unprotected copy, and merge that.

Is there a limit on how many PDFs I can merge?

You can merge up to 100 files at once, each up to 200 MB and 500 MB in total. The limits exist because everything runs in your device's memory; for more, merge in batches and then merge the results.

Are bookmarks and form fields kept when I merge PDFs?

No. Page content, size, rotation and links are kept, but bookmarks are dropped and form fields stop being fillable (what was typed into them stays visible). Document attachments and digital signatures are not carried over either.

Methodology

Pages are copied with pdf-lib, not re-rendered: text, fonts, images and vector graphics are kept byte for byte, with each page's size, crop box and rotation. Web links are kept and links between pages are re-pointed at the merged copy. Document-level features are not carried over: bookmarks (outline), the interactive form (fields stay visible but are no longer fillable), document attachments, accessibility tags, page labels and digital signatures. Title and author metadata is not copied; the producer is set to AllUtil. Encrypted PDFs are refused rather than merged incorrectly.
