What is PDF to JPG Converter?
This tool turns the pages of a PDF into JPG images, one image per page, entirely inside your browser. It is for anyone who needs a page as a picture — to post a flyer on social media, put a slide into a chat, attach a scanned form to a site that only accepts images, or preview a document on a device without a PDF reader.
It works by drawing each page the way a PDF viewer does, then saving the drawing as a photo-style image. The drawing is done by pdf.js, the open-source PDF renderer maintained by Mozilla and built into Firefox. pdf.js paints the page onto an invisible canvas at the resolution you choose, the page is laid on white first (JPG has no transparency), and your browser's JPG encoder compresses the result at the quality you set — 90 out of 100 by default.
Resolution is set in DPI, dots per inch. A PDF measures pages in units of 1/72 inch, so the image size is simply the page size × DPI ÷ 72. A US Letter page (8.5 × 11 in, 612 × 792 units) comes out at 612 × 792 pixels at 72 DPI, 1275 × 1650 at 150 DPI and 2550 × 3300 at 300 DPI; an A4 page is 1240 × 1753 at 150 DPI. Use 72 DPI for a quick on-screen preview, 150 DPI for sharing and reading (the default), and 300 DPI when the image will be printed or you need to zoom into small text. The tool shows the exact pixel size of page 1 before you convert.
Know what you are giving up. A PDF page is made of text, fonts and vector shapes that stay sharp at any zoom; a JPG is a fixed grid of pixels. After conversion the text is part of the picture — you cannot select, search or copy it. Anything visible on the page, including filled-in form fields and annotation marks, is flattened into the picture; links stop working, and bookmarks, attachments and hidden comment text are not carried over. JPG compression is also lossy, which can leave faint smudges around sharp black text. If you want crisp text with no compression artefacts, use PDF to PNG instead; if you need the text back as text, the original PDF is the better file to keep.
To keep the browser tab from running out of memory, one conversion is limited to 200 pages and 1,000 megapixels in total, and a single page cannot exceed 100 megapixels or 16,384 pixels per side — about a 54-inch page at 300 DPI. When a request goes over, the tool tells you which page and which lower resolution will work. Password-protected PDFs have to be unlocked first: open the file with its password in a PDF reader, save an unprotected copy, and convert that.
The PDF never leaves your device. pdf.js runs from this site's own server, the file is read into your browser's memory, and the images are created there. You can check in your browser's developer tools, under the Network tab, that no request carries your file.
1. The file's first bytes are checked for the %PDF- header, so a JPG or Word file renamed to .pdf is named for what it is. Files over 200 MB are refused before they are read into memory. 2. pdf.js opens the PDF and reports the page count and the size of each page in PDF units (1/72 inch), with any page rotation applied. 3. The pages you chose (All, or a range like 1-3, 5) are checked: at most 200 per conversion. 4. Each page's pixel size is computed as width × DPI ÷ 72 and height × DPI ÷ 72, rounded down. A page over 100 megapixels or 16,384 px per side, or a total over 1,000 megapixels, is refused before anything is drawn, with the resolution that would fit. 5. Pages are rendered one at a time: a canvas of that size is painted white, pdf.js draws the page onto it, and canvas.toBlob("image/jpeg", quality) encodes it. The canvas is then released before the next page. 6. Files are named after the PDF with a zero-padded page number — report.pdf becomes report-page-01.jpg, report-page-02.jpg … — so they sort in page order. Download each one, or all of them as a ZIP built in the browser.
| Image size | Best for | |
|---|---|---|
| 72 DPI | 612 × 792 px (0.5 MP) | Thumbnails and quick previews |
| 150 DPI (default) | 1275 × 1650 px (2.1 MP) | Sharing, chat, email, reading on screen |
| 300 DPI | 2550 × 3300 px (8.4 MP) | Printing, zooming into small text, OCR |
Worked examples
- report.pdf, 12 US Letter pages, Pages: All, 150 DPI → 12 JPGs named report-page-01.jpg to report-page-12.jpg, each 1275 × 1650 px, at quality 90.
- The same page at 300 DPI → 2550 × 3300 px (8.4 megapixels), sharp enough to print at full size.
- An A4 page (595.28 × 841.89 PDF units) at 150 DPI → 1240 × 1753 px; the fractions are rounded down, as the renderer does.
- An A0 poster at 300 DPI → refused: it would be 9933 × 14043 px, over the 100-megapixel canvas limit; the message suggests 150 DPI, which gives 4966 × 7021 px.
- A 250-page PDF with Pages: All → refused with a suggestion to convert 1-200 first and the remaining pages (201-) in a second pass.
How to use PDF to JPG Converter
- Click "Choose a PDF" or drop a PDF onto the box. The page count and page 1's size in pixels appear.
- Set Pages to All, or pick "Range…" and type pages like 1-3, 5. Choose a Resolution (150 DPI suits most uses) and, if you like, adjust Quality.
- Click "Convert to JPG". The button shows progress ("Page 3 of 12…") while each page is rendered in your browser.
- Click Download next to any page, or "Download all (.zip)" to get every image in one archive.
Common errors
- "… is password-protected" — the PDF is encrypted. Open it in a PDF reader with the password, save an unprotected copy, and convert that.
- "… is not a readable PDF — the file is damaged or incomplete" — usually a download that did not finish. Download the PDF again and retry.
- "… is actually a JPG file, not PDF" — the file was renamed. The tool reads the file's contents, not its name; use the converter for the format it really is.
- "That is 250 pages — the limit is 200 per conversion" — every image stays in memory until you download it. Enter a range like 1-200, convert, then do 201- separately.
- "Page 1 at 300 DPI would be 9933 × 14043 px — more than a browser can safely draw" — the page is very large (a poster or drawing). Choose the lower DPI the message suggests, or leave that page out of the range.
- "… megapixels in total — over the 1,000 MP a browser tab can safely hold" — many pages at 300 DPI. Use 150 DPI, or convert fewer pages at a time.
FAQ
How do I convert a PDF to JPG without uploading it?
Choose the PDF on this page and click "Convert to JPG". The pages are rendered by pdf.js inside your browser, so the file is never sent to a server. You can confirm it in your browser's developer tools under the Network tab.
How do I convert only some pages of a PDF to images?
Set Pages to "Range…" and type the pages you want, such as 2-4, 7 or 10- for page 10 to the end. Only those pages are converted, and each file keeps its original page number in its name.
What DPI should I use to convert a PDF to JPG?
150 DPI is right for most uses: a Letter page becomes 1275 × 1650 px, readable on any screen. Use 300 DPI (2550 × 3300 px) for printing or tiny text, and 72 DPI for small previews.
Will the text in my PDF still be selectable in the JPG?
No. A JPG is a picture, so the text becomes pixels and can no longer be selected, searched or copied. Keep the original PDF if you need the text, or run the images through an OCR tool to get the text back.
Does converting a PDF to JPG lose quality?
Some. The page is turned into a fixed number of pixels, so it will not stay sharp at any zoom the way the PDF does, and JPG compression is lossy. A higher DPI and quality keep more detail; for perfectly crisp text use PDF to PNG, which is lossless.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF to JPG?
Not directly. Open the PDF in a reader with its password, save a copy without protection, and convert that copy. This tool does not remove or bypass passwords.
Is there a page or file size limit?
Yes: PDFs up to 200 MB, and up to 200 pages and 1,000 megapixels per conversion, because everything happens in your browser's memory. Larger jobs can be done in several passes using page ranges.
Does PDF to JPG work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, in any modern mobile browser. Phones have less memory than computers, so for long documents use 150 DPI and convert in smaller page ranges; iPhones and iPads also cap a single image at about 16.7 megapixels, so 300 DPI can fail there on pages larger than Letter.
