What is PDF to PNG Converter?
This tool converts the pages of a PDF into PNG images, one lossless image per page, without the file leaving your browser. It is for people who need a page as a sharp picture: a diagram for a slide deck, a chart for a report, a page of a manual for documentation, or a high-resolution image of a form to print or annotate.
Each page is drawn by pdf.js, the open-source PDF renderer maintained by Mozilla and built into Firefox. pdf.js paints the page onto an invisible canvas at the resolution you pick, and your browser saves that canvas as PNG. PNG compression is lossless, so every rendered pixel is stored exactly: thin lines and small text stay as crisp as the renderer drew them, with none of the smudging JPG compression adds around sharp edges. That is why PNG is the usual choice for pages of text, line art and screenshots.
Resolution is chosen in DPI (dots per inch). PDF measures pages in units of 1/72 inch, so the image size is the page size × DPI ÷ 72. A US Letter page (612 × 792 units) becomes 612 × 792 px at 72 DPI, 1275 × 1650 px at 150 DPI and 2550 × 3300 px at 300 DPI; an A4 page is 2480 × 3507 px at 300 DPI. Choose 72 DPI for small previews, 150 DPI for on-screen use (the default), and 300 DPI for print or when you want a high-resolution PNG you can zoom into. The pixel size of page 1 is shown before you convert.
Two things to know. First, the background is white: the tool paints each page white before drawing it, so areas of the PDF where nothing is drawn — which a PDF treats as transparent — come out white, not transparent. Second, the result is a picture. Text becomes pixels that cannot be selected, searched or copied; links and form fields stop working; bookmarks, attachments and hidden comment text are not carried over. Anything visible on the page, including annotation marks and filled-in fields, is flattened into the image.
Lossless has a cost in size. A page that is mostly text on white usually compresses well, but a page with photographs produces a PNG many times bigger than the same page as JPG. If you need small files for email or the web, use PDF to JPG instead.
Limits exist to keep your browser tab alive: up to 200 pages and 1,000 megapixels per conversion, and no single page over 100 megapixels or 16,384 px on a side. If a request goes over, the message names the page and the lower resolution that will fit. Password-protected PDFs need to be unlocked first — open the file with its password in a PDF reader, save an unprotected copy, and convert that.
Everything happens locally: the PDF is read into your browser's memory, rendered and encoded there, and offered back as downloads. In your browser's developer tools, the Network tab shows no request carrying your file.
1. The file's first bytes are checked for the %PDF- header, so a renamed image or document is named for what it really is. Files over 200 MB are refused. 2. pdf.js opens the PDF and reports each page's size in PDF units (1/72 inch), rotation applied. 3. The pages you selected (All, or a range like 2-4, 7) are checked: at most 200 per conversion. 4. Pixel size per page = width × DPI ÷ 72 by height × DPI ÷ 72, rounded down. Pages over 100 megapixels or 16,384 px per side, and totals over 1,000 megapixels, are refused before rendering, with a resolution that fits. 5. Page by page, a canvas of that size is filled white, pdf.js draws the page onto it, and canvas.toBlob("image/png") encodes it losslessly. The canvas is released before the next page. 6. Files are named after the PDF with a zero-padded page number — slides.pdf page 2 becomes slides-page-02.png — so they sort in order. Download each, or all of them as a ZIP made in the browser.
| PNG | JPG | |

| Compression | Lossless — pixels stored exactly | Lossy — adjustable quality |
| Sharp text and line art | Crisp, no artefacts | Slight smudging around edges |
| Pages with photos | Large files | Much smaller files |

Worked examples
- slides.pdf, 5 pages, Pages: Range 2-3, 150 DPI, landscape Letter pages (792 × 612 units) → slides-page-02.png and slides-page-03.png, each 1650 × 1275 px.
- form.pdf, one US Letter page at 300 DPI → form-page-01.png, 2550 × 3300 px, for printing at full size.
- The same page at 72 DPI → 612 × 792 px: one pixel per PDF unit.
- An A0 poster at 300 DPI → refused (9933 × 14043 px is over the 100-megapixel canvas limit), with a suggestion to use 150 DPI.
How to use PDF to PNG Converter
- Click "Choose a PDF" or drop a PDF onto the box. The page count and the pixel size of page 1 appear.
- Leave Pages on All, or choose "Range…" and type pages such as 2-4, 7. Pick a Resolution: 150 DPI for screens, 300 DPI for high resolution or print.
- Click "Convert to PNG" and wait while the button counts through the pages ("Page 2 of 5…").
- Download any page, or click "Download all (.zip)" for every PNG in one archive.
Common errors
- "… is password-protected" — the PDF is encrypted. Open it with the password in a PDF reader, save an unprotected copy, and convert that.
- "… is not a readable PDF — the file is damaged or incomplete" — often an unfinished download. Download the PDF again.
- "… is actually a PNG file, not PDF" — the file was renamed. The tool checks the contents, not the name; use the tool for the format the file really is.
- "That is 250 pages — the limit is 200 per conversion" — enter a range like 1-200, convert, and do the rest in a second pass.
- "Page 1 at 300 DPI would be 9933 × 14043 px — more than a browser can safely draw" — the page is very large. Choose the DPI the message suggests or leave that page out.
- The PNG has a white background, not a transparent one — expected: pages are rendered onto white, so empty areas of the PDF become white.
FAQ
How do I convert a PDF to PNG for free without uploading it?
Choose the PDF on this page and click "Convert to PNG". The pages are rendered in your browser by pdf.js and saved as PNG on your device; the file is never sent anywhere. It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
How do I convert a PDF to a high-resolution PNG?
Set Resolution to 300 DPI before converting. A US Letter page then becomes 2550 × 3300 pixels and an A4 page 2480 × 3507 pixels, which is print quality.
Is PDF to PNG better than PDF to JPG?
For text, diagrams and line art, yes: PNG is lossless, so edges stay crisp with no compression artefacts. For pages full of photos, JPG gives much smaller files with little visible difference.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. Each page is painted white before it is drawn, so areas of the PDF with nothing on them come out white. That matches how the page looks in a PDF viewer.
Can I convert just one page of a PDF to PNG?
Yes. Choose "Range…" under Pages and type the page number, such as 4, or several pages like 2-3, 7. Only those pages are converted.
Will the text in the PNG still be searchable?
No. The text is turned into pixels, so it cannot be selected, searched or copied any more. Keep the PDF for the text, or use an OCR tool on the PNG to extract it.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF to PNG?
Not until it is unlocked. Open the PDF with its password in a PDF reader, save a copy without protection, and convert that copy; this tool does not bypass passwords.
Is there a limit on pages or file size?
Yes: PDFs up to 200 MB, and up to 200 pages and 1,000 megapixels per conversion, because everything happens in your browser's memory. For longer documents, convert in several page ranges.
