What is Split PDF?

Split PDF takes one PDF and cuts it into new ones: pull out the pages you need, remove the pages you don't, or break the file into one PDF per page or per range. It is for everyday jobs like sending only the signed page of a contract, dropping a blank scan page, separating a batch of scanned invoices, or taking one chapter out of a long report.

There are four modes. Extract pages makes one new PDF from the pages you list, in the order you type them — "5, 1-3" gives page 5 first, then 1, 2 and 3. Split every page makes a separate one-page PDF for every page, which you can download together as a ZIP. Split by ranges makes one PDF per comma-separated range, so "1-3, 4-6, 7-" on a 10-page file gives three files. Delete pages keeps everything except the pages you list. Page numbers start at 1, as in every PDF viewer, and "8-" means page 8 to the end. As soon as you choose a file, the tool reads it and shows how many pages it has, so you know which numbers are valid.

The work is done in your browser by pdf-lib, an open-source PDF library. Pages are copied into new documents exactly as they are — nothing is re-rendered or recompressed — so text stays selectable, images keep their quality, and each page keeps its size and rotation. Links that jump to another page are kept when that page is in the same output file and removed when it is not, so no link points at a page that isn't there. Each output file is named after the original and its pages, like report-pages-1-3.pdf or report-page-4.pdf.

A few things belong to the whole document and are not carried into the new files: bookmarks, the fillable form (typed values stay visible, but the fields are no longer editable), attached files, accessibility tags and digital signatures. Password-protected or permission-locked PDFs are refused with a clear message, because the library cannot decrypt them — open such a file with its password, save an unprotected copy, and split that. Files up to 200 MB are accepted.

Your PDF is never uploaded. It is read, split and handed back entirely inside your browser tab; you can check in your browser's developer tools (Network tab) that no request carries the file. The site loads its own scripts and analytics, but never your documents.

1. The file's first bytes are checked for the PDF signature, then pdf-lib opens it; encrypted and damaged files are refused with a specific message, and the page count is shown. 2. Your page list is parsed: numbers (4), ranges (2-6) and open ranges (8- for page 8 to the end), separated by commas. Every number is checked against the page count before anything is built. 3. The mode decides the output: Extract keeps the pages in typed order with repeats removed; Split every page makes one file per page; Split by ranges makes one file per range; Delete keeps every page you did not list, in the original order, and refuses to delete them all. 4. For each output, the pages are copied into a new PDF with pdf-lib's copyPages. Internal links are re-pointed at the copied pages or removed if their target page is not in that file. 5. Each file is saved with compressed object streams and named after the original and its pages; with several files you can download them all as one ZIP.

What each mode produces, for a 10-page report.pdf
 You typeYou get
Extract pages1-3, 5report-pages-1-3_5.pdf (4 pages)
Split every page(nothing)report-page-01.pdf … report-page-10.pdf
Split by ranges1-3, 4-6, 7-report-pages-1-3.pdf, report-pages-4-6.pdf, report-pages-7-10.pdf
Delete pages2, 4report-without-pages-2_4.pdf (8 pages)

Worked examples

  • Extract "1-3, 5" from a 6-page report.pdf → report-pages-1-3_5.pdf containing pages 1, 2, 3 and 5.
  • Split every page of a 6-page report.pdf → report-page-1.pdf to report-page-6.pdf, one page each (with 10 or more pages the numbers are zero-padded, e.g. report-page-01.pdf, so they sort correctly).
  • Split by ranges "1-3, 4, 5-" on a 6-page report.pdf → report-pages-1-3.pdf, report-page-4.pdf and report-pages-5-6.pdf.
  • Delete "2, 4" from a 6-page report.pdf → report-without-pages-2_4.pdf with pages 1, 3, 5 and 6.
  • Delete "1-6" from a 6-page PDF → refused: a PDF needs at least one page.

How to use Split PDF

  1. Click "Choose a PDF" or drop a PDF onto the box. The page count appears next to the file name.
  2. Pick a mode: Extract pages, Split every page, Split by ranges or Delete pages.
  3. For every mode except Split every page, type the pages in the Pages box, e.g. 1-3, 5 or 8- for page 8 to the end.
  4. Click the button — "Extract pages", "Split PDF" or "Delete pages" — then download each file, or "Download all (.zip)" when there are several.

Common errors

  • "Page 9 does not exist — this PDF has 6 pages." — a number is higher than the page count shown next to the file name. Check the count and correct the list.
  • "… runs backwards" — a range like 5-2 has the higher page first. Write the lower page first: 2-5. To get pages in reverse order, list them individually: 5, 4, 3, 2.
  • "That removes all 6 pages — a PDF needs at least one page." — in Delete pages mode you listed every page. Leave out at least one page number.
  • "… is not a page or range" — the list contains something other than numbers, dashes and commas. Use 4, 2-6 or 8-, separated by commas.
  • "… is encrypted (password-protected or locked against editing)" — the PDF is protected, and its pages cannot be copied. Open it in a PDF reader, save or print an unprotected copy, and split that.
  • "This PDF has only 1 page, so there is nothing to split." — Split every page needs at least two pages.

FAQ

How do I split a PDF without uploading it?

Choose the PDF on this page, pick a mode, type the pages and click the button — the file is split inside your browser and the new PDFs are downloaded directly. Nothing is sent to a server.

How do I delete pages from a PDF?

Choose the PDF, select "Delete pages", type the pages to remove (for example 2, 5-6) and click "Delete pages". You get a copy of the PDF without those pages; the original file on your device is not changed.

How do I extract pages from a PDF into a new file?

Select "Extract pages" and type the pages you want, such as 1-3, 5. The new PDF contains those pages in the order you typed, so you can also use it to reorder pages.

How do I separate every page of a PDF into its own file?

Select "Split every page" and click "Split PDF". Each page becomes its own PDF, and "Download all (.zip)" saves them together in one archive.

Does splitting a PDF reduce the quality?

No. Pages are copied exactly as they are, not re-rendered, so text stays selectable and images keep their quality. Each page keeps its original size and rotation.

Is it safe to split confidential PDFs here?

Yes. The PDF never leaves your device: it is read and split in your browser tab and is gone when you close it. You can confirm in your browser's developer tools that no network request carries the file.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Not directly. The library this tool uses cannot decrypt protected PDFs, so they are refused rather than turned into broken files. Open it with the password in a PDF reader, save an unprotected copy, and split that.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It runs in the browser, so it works in Safari on iPhone and iPad and in Chrome on Android — pick the PDF from your Files app or downloads. Nothing needs to be installed.

Methodology

Pages are copied with pdf-lib, not re-rendered: text, fonts, images and vector graphics are kept exactly, with each page's size, crop box and rotation. Links to pages inside the same output file are kept and re-pointed; links to pages that are not in it are removed. Document-level features are not carried over: bookmarks (outline), the interactive form (fields stay visible but are no longer fillable), attachments, accessibility tags, page labels and digital signatures. Title and author metadata is not copied. Encrypted PDFs are refused.
