What is Sign PDF?

Sign PDF puts your signature on a PDF in your browser: draw it with a mouse, finger or stylus, type your name in a handwriting-style font, or upload a photo or scan of your signature, then place it on any page, add the date or your printed name, and download the signed PDF. It is for the everyday paperwork that asks you to "sign and return" — a lease, a consent form, an invoice approval, a school letter — when you do not want to print, sign and scan.

Be clear about what kind of signature this makes. It is a visual electronic signature: a picture of your signature (vector pen strokes when you draw it, an image when you type or upload it) drawn onto the page. It is not a certificate-based digital signature — there is no certificate, no cryptographic seal and no PAdES signature, so the PDF does not prove who signed it or detect later changes. In the EU, the eIDAS Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 defines an electronic signature as data in electronic form attached to other data and used by the signatory to sign, and says it shall not be denied legal effect solely because it is electronic; only a qualified electronic signature, made with a qualified certificate and signature-creation device, has the equivalent legal effect of a handwritten signature. In the US, the ESIGN Act says a signature or contract may not be denied legal effect solely because it is electronic, but it excludes some documents, including wills, family-law matters and court documents. Whether a picture of your signature is enough depends on the document and the jurisdiction; when a contract, a public authority or your bank asks for an advanced or qualified signature, use a trust-service provider instead. This page is not legal advice.

How it works: pdf.js shows the page you are on, and your signature is kept in page points so it lands exactly where you put it, on rotated pages too. A drawn signature is smoothed into curves and saved as vector lines, so it stays sharp at any zoom. A typed signature uses your device's own cursive, serif-italic or sans-serif font and is saved as the image you see, so it looks the same everywhere. An uploaded picture is scaled to at most 1,600 px on its longest side and, if you leave "Remove white background" on, pixels lighter than the threshold become transparent so the paper does not show as a box. Saving draws everything on top of the original pages with pdf-lib — the rest of the PDF, including links and form fields, is kept — and downloads <name>-signed.pdf.

Password-protected PDFs are refused. If the PDF already carries a certificate-based digital signature, you are warned that saving will make it stop validating. Limits: one PDF up to 200 MB and a signature image up to 15 MB.

Nothing is uploaded: the PDF and your signature stay in your browser tab. You can verify it in the developer tools' Network tab — no request carries your file or your signature (the page loads its own scripts, fonts and analytics, which never include them).

1. The PDF is checked for the PDF signature and opened with pdf-lib; encrypted files are refused and each page's visible area and rotation are read. pdf.js renders only the current page. 2. Drawn signature: pointer positions (mouse, touch or pen) are recorded on a 600 × 200 pad, points closer than 1 unit are dropped, and each stroke is smoothed into quadratic Bézier curves through the midpoints of consecutive points. 3. Typed signature: your name is drawn at 120 px in the chosen generic font family on a canvas cropped to the text and saved as a transparent PNG. Uploaded signature: scaled to at most 1,600 px on the longest side; with background removal on, a pixel whose luminance (0.2126 R + 0.7152 G + 0.0722 B) is at or above the threshold (default 200) becomes transparent, and pixels up to 40 below it fade proportionally. The Strength slider sets the threshold as 255 − strength, so a higher strength removes more. 4. A new signature is centred on the page at 30% of the page width (at most 220 pt, about 7.8 cm) and at most a quarter of the page height; you then move and resize it. The date line is your device's local date in the format you pick. 5. On save, pdf-lib draws each item over the original page content — strokes as vector paths, images embedded once — and saves <name>-signed.pdf.

Worked examples

  • lease.pdf with a drawn signature on page 2 and an uploaded one on page 1 → lease-signed.pdf, still 2 pages at their original sizes.
  • A new 3:1 signature on an A4 page (595.28 pt wide) → placed at 30% of the width, 178.6 pt (6.3 cm) wide and 59.5 pt tall, centred on the page.
  • Date on 1 October 2026 → "1 October 2026", "October 1, 2026", "2026-10-01", "01/10/2026" or "10/01/2026", depending on the format chosen.
  • A 4032 × 3024 phone photo of a signature → scaled to 1600 × 1200 px before the background is removed.
  • Background removal at the default Strength (55, which removes everything at luminance 200 or lighter) → white paper becomes transparent, a grey edge pixel of luminance 180 keeps half its opacity, black ink is unchanged. Strength 135 also removes light grey down to luminance 120.

How to use Sign PDF

  1. Click "Choose a PDF" or drop your PDF onto the box.
  2. Create your signature: Draw it in the box, Type your name and pick a style, or Upload a PNG or JPG — then click "Use this signature".
  3. Drag the signature onto the signature line and drag a corner to size it. Use "Date" for today's date and "Text" for your printed name; "Place my signature on page N" adds it to other pages.
  4. Click "Save signed PDF", then "Download" to save <name>-signed.pdf.

Common errors

  • "… is encrypted (password-protected or locked against editing), so it cannot be edited here" — open it in a PDF reader with the password, save an unprotected copy, and sign that.
  • "… is actually a PDF file, not PNG or JPG" (or another format) — the signature picture must be a PNG or JPG; take a photo or screenshot of your signature and upload that.
  • Paper still shows around an uploaded signature — raise the Strength slider; if parts of the ink disappear, lower it. Photos taken in shadow may need a brighter, evenly lit picture.
  • "Type your name to create a typed signature." — the name box is empty.
  • A warning that the PDF contains a digital (certificate) signature — saving any change rewrites the file and that existing signature will no longer validate; ask the sender whether to sign a copy without it.
  • "Nothing to save yet — add text, an image, a shape, a drawing or a signature to a page first." — place your signature on a page before saving.

FAQ

How do I sign a PDF online for free without uploading it?

Open the PDF here, draw, type or upload your signature, drag it into place and click "Save signed PDF". Everything happens in your browser, so the document and your signature are never sent to a server.

Is a signature added with this tool legally binding?

It can be, but it depends on the document and the country. EU and US law say an electronic signature cannot be refused solely because it is electronic, but some documents (wills and court papers in the US, for example) are excluded and some contracts require an advanced or qualified signature. This tool makes a visual electronic signature, not a certificate-based one; this is general information, not legal advice.

What is the difference between an electronic signature and a digital signature?

An electronic signature is any electronic data a person uses to sign — a typed name or a picture of a signature counts. A digital signature (in eIDAS terms, an advanced or qualified electronic signature) uses a certificate and cryptography to identify the signer and detect any later change to the document. This tool makes the first kind only.

How do I draw my signature on a phone or tablet?

Open this page in your phone's browser, choose Draw and sign in the box with your finger or a stylus, then tap "Use this signature". You can drag and resize it on the page by touch.

Can I upload a picture of my handwritten signature?

Yes. Choose Upload and pick a PNG or JPG; leave "Remove white background" on so the paper becomes transparent, and adjust the Strength slider until only the ink remains. Sign on plain white paper in good light for the cleanest result.

Can I add the date and my name next to the signature?

Yes. "Date" adds today's date in the format you choose, and "Text" adds any text such as your printed name; both can be moved, resized and recoloured.

Is it safe to sign confidential documents here?

Yes. The PDF and your signature stay in your browser tab and are never uploaded or stored by us. You can confirm in the developer tools' Network tab that no request contains them.

Why does my typed signature look different on another computer?

The handwriting style uses your device's own cursive font, which differs between Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone. The PDF gets exactly the image you saw when you created it, so the signed document looks the same everywhere.
