What is Text to PDF?
Text to PDF turns plain text into a real PDF document you can download, print or send. Paste a note, a list, a draft, a receipt, a code snippet or a block of copy, and the tool lays it out onto A4 or Letter pages with word wrapping, then gives you the file. It is for the everyday job of getting text out of a text box and into something that looks like a document and prints correctly. The layout runs entirely inside your browser tab, so nothing you paste is uploaded anywhere.
You choose the page size and two things that control the page: the font size and the margin. A4 is 210 × 297 mm (595.28 × 841.89 points) and Letter is 8.5 × 11 in (612 × 792 points); 1 point is 1/72 of an inch. The margin is the clearance on all four sides, in points — 72 pt is one inch, so it is the usual default. The font size is the height of the text in points; 11 or 12 pt is ordinary body text. Only one built-in font is used, Helvetica, which keeps output small and needs no font files.
Wrapping and paging are done by the tool, not by you. A line is broken between words so it never crosses the right margin; a word you deliberately put on its own line (an explicit line break) starts a new line; a word wider than the whole column — a long URL, an unbroken identifier — is split across lines rather than running off the page. When the next line would pass the bottom margin, a new page begins. Line spacing is fixed at one and a half times the font size (12 pt text steps 18 pt between baselines), which is why the number of lines a page holds is predictable: 39 lines fit an A4 page at 12 pt with 72 pt margins, and 36 fit a Letter page. Blank lines are kept as gaps, and consecutive spaces are collapsed to one. Nothing is centred or justified — the text is flush left, one column.
Because the PDF is created fresh, the text is real, selectable, searchable text (not an image), so you can copy from it in any reader and it will show up in search. The one limit to know before you start: the built-in font covers the WinAnsi character set only — Latin letters including Western European accents (é, ü, ñ), digits and common punctuation such as curly quotes, the em dash and the euro sign — but not Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew, Cyrillic, Greek, Devanagari, mathematical symbols such as ≤ or ∞, or emoji. If your text contains one of those, the tool tells you exactly which character it is and stops, rather than dropping it or printing an empty box. For those scripts you would need a tool that embeds a full Unicode font.
This is a one-way, one-shot converter: it does not read an existing PDF, and it does not offer bold, italics, headings, tables, images, colours or alignment — plain text only, in black. If you need to number the pages, use Add Page Numbers to PDF on the result; if you need to join it with other files, use Merge PDF. Everything runs on your own device, and the page's Network tab will show that no request carries your text.
1. The text is tidied without changing the words: Windows and old-Mac line endings and the Unicode line separators become plain line breaks, tabs and fixed-width spaces become ordinary spaces, and trailing blank lines are dropped. 2. The settings are validated — page size A4 or Letter, font size 6–72 pt, margin 0–200 pt — and the text must not be empty or longer than 1,000,000 characters. 3. The text column is page width minus twice the margin. Each paragraph (split on line breaks) is wrapped word by word: words are joined with single spaces and a line is closed as soon as adding the next word would pass the column width. A single word wider than the column is broken character by character. 4. Page capacity is computed from the page height, the two margins and the line step (font size × 1.5): capacity = floor((height − 2 × margin − full glyph height) ÷ line step) + 1, so the descender of the last line stays above the bottom margin. The wrapped lines are then cut into pages of that many lines. 5. The wrapped lines are checked character by character against the embedded font, and any character outside the WinAnsi set is refused by name before anything is drawn. 6. Each page is created and each line is drawn at x = margin with its baseline at page height − margin − ascender, dropping by the line step for each following line, in black Helvetica. The document is saved as document.pdf and returned to the browser.
| Page size | Size in points | Size on paper | Lines at 12 pt, 72 pt margins | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A4 | 595.28 × 841.89 | 210 × 297 mm | 39 lines | |
| Letter | 612 × 792 | 8.5 × 11 in | 36 lines |
Worked examples
- "Hello world" on A4 at 12 pt with 72 pt margins → document.pdf, 1 page, 1 line, reading "Hello world"; the first baseline sits 761.274 pt up the 841.89 pt page (841.89 − 72 − 8.616).
- Page capacity at 12 pt with 72 pt margins: A4 holds 39 lines, Letter holds 36.
- "First line\nSecond line" → exactly two lines, drawn 18 pt apart (12 pt × 1.5).
- A 200-character word with no spaces, at 12 pt on A4 with 72 pt margins → 3 lines of 67, 67 and 66 characters, because 67 "a"s are 447.024 pt wide and fit the 451.28 pt column while 68 are 453.696 pt and do not.
- 40 lines on A4 at 12 pt → 2 pages: 39 lines on page 1, the 40th on page 2.
- "Café — “quoted” • €10" is drawn exactly as written: é, the em dash, curly quotes, the bullet and the euro sign are all inside the WinAnsi set.
- "中文" is refused with a message naming "中" and "文", because the built-in font cannot draw them.
- Measurements the layout uses at 12 pt Helvetica: "Hello world" is 59.4 pt wide, "a" is 6.672 pt, the ascender above the baseline is 8.616 pt and the full glyph height is 11.1 pt.
How to use Text to PDF
- Type or paste your text into the box. The character count updates as you go.
- Choose the page size (A4 or Letter), the font size and the margin. The defaults — A4, 12 pt, 72 pt (one inch) — suit most documents.
- Click "Create PDF". If any character cannot be drawn, or a setting is out of range, the reason is shown instead of a file.
- Click "Download" to save document.pdf. Your text stays on the page, so you can tweak the settings and create another version.
Common errors
- "Type or paste some text first — the box is empty." — the text box has nothing in it, or only spaces and blank lines. Paste the text you want in the PDF.
- "Your text contains "中", which the built-in font cannot draw …" — the text has a character outside the WinAnsi set (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew, Cyrillic, Greek, Devanagari, a mathematical symbol or an emoji). The message names every offending character. Remove or replace them; this tool cannot embed a full Unicode font.
- "Font size must be between 6 and 72 pt — 100 pt is outside that range." — choose a font size between 6 and 72 points. A blank box reads "a blank value" in the same message.
- "Margin must be between 0 and 200 pt — 250 pt is outside that range." — choose a margin between 0 and 200 points (72 pt = 1 inch).
- "That text is 1,000,001 characters — the limit is 1,000,000 per document …" — the paste is larger than the tool will lay out in one go, because the whole layout is held in your browser's memory. Split it into two documents.
- A long web address or code token reaches the edge of the page — it does not: a word wider than the column is broken across lines, so an unbroken string will sometimes split mid-word. Add a space if you want it to break at a chosen point.
- The lines are wider or narrower apart than expected — line spacing is fixed at 1.5 × the font size. To fit more lines on a page, use a smaller font size or smaller margins.
FAQ
How do I convert text to a PDF?
Paste your text into the box, choose the page size, font size and margin, and click "Create PDF". A paginated PDF is built in your browser and offered as document.pdf. Nothing is uploaded and there is no sign-up.
Is my text uploaded to a server?
No. The text is laid out and turned into a PDF entirely inside your browser tab. You can confirm in your browser's developer tools, on the Network tab, that no request carries your text.
What page sizes and fonts can I use?
A4 (210 × 297 mm) or Letter (8.5 × 11 in), at a font size of 6 to 72 points with margins of 0 to 200 points. One built-in font, Helvetica, is used — it needs no font file and keeps the PDF small.
Can I convert text with emoji, Chinese or Arabic characters?
Not with this tool. It uses the standard PDF font, which covers the WinAnsi character set — Latin letters (accents included), digits and common punctuation — and nothing else. If your text contains a character outside that set, the tool names it and stops. You would need a tool that embeds a full Unicode font for those scripts.
Will the PDF text be selectable and searchable?
Yes. The text is drawn as real PDF text, not as a picture, so you can select, copy and search it in any PDF reader, and it prints crisply at any size. It is a brand-new document, so there is no existing digital signature to invalidate.
Can I keep my line breaks and blank lines?
Yes. Every line break you type becomes a new line, and a blank line becomes a gap of one line. Runs of spaces are collapsed to a single space, and trailing blank lines at the very end are ignored so the document does not gain an empty page.
Can I make the text bold, italic or centred?
No. This tool lays out plain text in one column, flush left, in black. It deliberately has no headings, fonts, colours, alignment, tables or images. Add those in a word processor, or edit the downloaded PDF with a PDF editor.
How many lines fit on a page?
It depends on the page size, the font size and the margin. At the defaults — A4, 12 pt, 72 pt (one inch) margins — 39 lines fit each A4 page, and 36 fit each Letter page. Line spacing is one and a half times the font size, so a smaller font or a smaller margin fits more lines.
Why is my long word or URL split across two lines?
A single word wider than the text column cannot fit on one line, so it is broken at the column edge rather than running off the page. If you want it to break at a chosen point, put a space where the break should be.
Does this tool read or edit an existing PDF?
No. It only creates a new PDF from text you paste. To take text out of a PDF use PDF to Text; to add page numbers to the result use Add Page Numbers to PDF; to join it with other files use Merge PDF.
