What is WebP to JPG Converter?
This tool converts WebP images to JPG (also written JPEG) inside your browser, for anyone who saved a picture from a website and found that an app, upload form or print shop will not accept the .webp file. JPG is the most widely accepted photo format there is, so converting to it is the quickest way to make an image usable everywhere.
WebP is the format Google introduced so web pages load faster; Google's own figures put lossy WebP files 25–34% smaller than comparable JPGs. That is why so many images saved with right-click, Save image as arrive as .webp even when the page seemed to show an ordinary photo.
Here is what actually happens when you click Convert to JPG. The first bytes of each file are checked for the WebP signature (RIFF…WEBP), so a file that is really a PNG or JPG with the wrong name is identified instead of failing with a vague error. Your browser then decodes the WebP with its built-in decoder, paints your chosen background colour onto a canvas the same size as the image, draws the image on top, and encodes the canvas as JPG at the quality you set — 92 out of 100 by default.
Two things are lost, and you should know which. First, transparency: JPG has no alpha channel, so every transparent or semi-transparent pixel is blended onto the background colour (white unless you pick another). If your WebP is a logo or cut-out with a see-through background that you need to keep, convert WebP to PNG instead. Second, JPG compression is lossy: each encode discards some fine detail. At quality 92 the difference is very hard to see; at 60 you will notice blocky artefacts around sharp edges and text. The JPG will usually be larger than the WebP, because JPG compresses less efficiently — that is the price of compatibility. Animated WebP files keep only their first frame, and the tool tells you when that happens.
Everything runs locally. Files are read into your browser's memory and converted there; they are never sent to a server. You can check this yourself in your browser's developer tools under Network: no request carries your image (the page itself loads normally, including anonymous analytics). You can convert up to 50 files at a time, each up to 50 MB, and download them one by one or together as a ZIP.
1. Each file's first bytes are read and checked for the WebP signature — "RIFF", a four-byte length, then "WEBP". A file with a different signature is rejected with a message naming its real format. 2. For WebP files with an extended (VP8X) header, the animation flag is read; if it is set, you are told that only the first frame will be converted. 3. The quality (1–100) and background colour (a hex value) are validated; quality is converted to the 0–1 scale the browser encoder uses. 4. The browser decodes the image (createImageBitmap) at its full size. A canvas of the same width and height is filled with the background colour, and the image is drawn over it, so transparent pixels blend onto that colour. 5. The canvas is encoded with canvas.toBlob("image/jpeg", quality). The file keeps its original name with the extension changed to .jpg.
| WebP | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy or lossless | Lossy |
| Transparency | Yes (alpha channel) | No — transparent areas need a background colour |
| Animation | Yes | No |
| File size for the same photo | Smaller (25–34% smaller, per Google) | Larger |
| Accepted by almost any app or upload form | Not always | Yes |
Worked examples
- photo.webp at the default settings → photo.jpg, encoded at quality 92 with any transparent areas filled white.
- logo.webp with the background set to #000000 and quality 80 → logo.jpg on black, at quality 80.
- loop.webp (an animated WebP) → loop.jpg containing the first frame, with a note that the animation was not kept.
- image.webp whose bytes are actually a PNG → no conversion; the tool says the file is really a PNG and to use a PNG tool.
How to use WebP to JPG Converter
- Click "Choose WebP images", drop files onto the box, or paste an image with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac). Up to 50 at once.
- Optionally move the Quality slider (92 is the default) and pick the colour that should replace transparent areas.
- Click "Convert to JPG". Each file is converted in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
- Click Download next to each JPG, or "Download all (.zip)" to get every file in one archive.
Common errors
- "… is actually a PNG file, not WebP" (or JPG) — the extension does not match the contents. Images saved from websites are often renamed. Use the converter for the format the message names.
- "… is empty (0 bytes)" — the download did not finish. Save the image again and retry.
- Transparent areas turned white (or black) — expected: JPG cannot store transparency, so those pixels take the background colour you chose. Convert WebP to PNG to keep a see-through background.
- The JPG is larger than the WebP — expected, not an error. WebP compresses better than JPG; lower the quality slider for a smaller file.
- Only the first frame was converted — the WebP was animated, and JPG is a still-image format.
- "Your browser could not encode an image this large" — the image exceeds your device's canvas limit (on iPhone and iPad roughly 16.7 megapixels). Use a desktop browser or resize the image first.
FAQ
How do I convert WebP to JPG for free?
Drop the WebP file on this page, click "Convert to JPG", then download the result. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no file count limit beyond 50 per batch, and it works in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Android or iPhone.
Is it safe to convert WebP to JPG online?
With this tool, yes: the conversion runs in your browser and the image is never uploaded to a server. You can confirm it in your browser's developer tools under the Network tab, where no request carries your file.
Will converting WebP to JPEG lose quality?
A little, because JPG is lossy. At the default quality of 92 the difference is very hard to see; lower settings trade visible detail for a smaller file. The conversion cannot recover detail a lossy WebP already discarded.
What happens to a transparent background when converting WebP to JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you pick — white by default. If you need to keep the transparency, convert WebP to PNG instead.
Why is my JPG bigger than the WebP file?
WebP compresses more efficiently than JPG — Google measures lossy WebP at 25–34% smaller for the same visual quality. Converting to JPG buys compatibility, not a smaller file; lowering the quality slider reduces the size.
Can I convert many WebP files to JPG at once?
Yes. Add up to 50 files, convert them together, and download each JPG or all of them in one ZIP file.
Why do images I save from websites download as WebP?
Most large websites deliver WebP because it loads faster. Your browser saves the file in the format the site actually sent, so a photo that looks ordinary on the page often arrives as .webp.
Does WebP to JPG conversion work on iPhone?
Yes, in Safari or any other iPhone browser. Very large images above about 16.7 megapixels can exceed the iPhone's canvas limit; the tool tells you if that happens.
