What is WebP to PNG Converter?

WebP is the image format Google introduced in 2010 and most websites now serve, because it makes pictures smaller than JPG or PNG at the same visual quality. That is great for loading pages and awkward for everything else: when you save an image from a website you often get a .webp file, and plenty of software — older image editors, office documents, print shops, upload forms — still refuses it. PNG is the universally accepted alternative, and this tool turns one into the other.

The conversion is done by your browser. It decodes the WebP with its own built-in WebP decoder, draws the pixels onto an invisible canvas, and encodes that canvas as PNG. PNG is lossless, so every decoded pixel is written exactly as it came out of the WebP — including its transparency, which is why PNG (not JPG) is the right target when the image has a see-through background, like a logo or a cut-out product shot. Nothing about the picture is recompressed or "improved"; if the WebP was lossy, the PNG is a perfect copy of that lossy image, not a restoration of the original.

Expect the PNG to be bigger than the WebP, often several times bigger for photos. That is not the converter being wasteful: lossless storage of a photographic image simply costs more bytes than WebP's compression. If you need a small file rather than a compatible one, convert to JPG instead, or compress the image after converting.

Every step runs locally. The file is read into your browser's memory, converted there, and offered back as a download — it is never sent to a server, which you can confirm in the Network tab of your browser's developer tools: no request carries your file. That matters when the image is a screenshot of a bank statement or a scan of an ID, which is exactly the kind of file people convert without thinking about where it goes.

1. The file's first bytes are checked for the WebP signature — the text RIFF, a four-byte length, then WEBP — so a file that is really a JPG or PNG with a .webp name is caught and named, instead of failing later with a vague decode error. 2. For WebP files with an extended (VP8X) header, the animation flag is read; if set, you are told that only the first frame is converted, because PNG here is a still image. 3. The browser decodes the image (createImageBitmap) and draws it onto a canvas at its full original size — no resizing, no smoothing. 4. The canvas is encoded with canvas.toBlob("image/png"). PNG compression is lossless, so the pixel values, alpha included, are preserved exactly. 5. The output keeps the original file name with the extension changed to .png. With several files you can download each one or all of them together as a ZIP built in the browser.

Worked examples

  • photo.webp (a real WebP) → photo.png, a lossless PNG at the same pixel size; transparent areas stay transparent.
  • loop.webp (an animated WebP) → loop.png containing the first frame, with a note that the animation was not kept.
  • download.webp whose bytes are actually a JPG → no conversion; the tool says the file is really a JPG and to use a JPG tool.

How to use WebP to PNG Converter

  1. Click "Choose WebP images", drop files onto the box, or paste an image with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac). You can add up to 50 at once.
  2. Click "Convert to PNG". Each file is converted in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
  3. Download each PNG individually, or click "Download all (.zip)" to get every file in one archive.

Common errors

  • The file is not really a WebP — images saved from the web are sometimes JPG or PNG files with a .webp name, or the reverse. The tool reads the file's signature and tells you what it actually is, so you can use the matching converter.
  • The file is empty or incomplete — a download that did not finish produces a 0-byte or truncated file that no decoder can read. Download the image again and retry.
  • The PNG is much larger than the WebP — expected, not an error. PNG stores pixels losslessly; if you need a small file, convert to JPG or compress the image afterwards.
  • Only the first frame was converted — the WebP was animated. PNG output here is a still image; keep the WebP, or convert to a GIF with a dedicated animation tool, if you need the motion.
  • Your browser could not encode an image this large — very large images (above roughly 16.7 megapixels on iPhone and iPad) exceed the device's canvas limit. Use a desktop browser, or resize the image first.

FAQ

How do I convert a WebP image to PNG for free?

Drop the WebP onto this page and click "Convert to PNG", then download the result. It is free, has no watermark and no sign-up, and works in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android or iPhone.

Does converting WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. PNG supports a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels in the WebP stay exactly as they were. This is the main reason to pick PNG over JPG, which has no transparency at all.

Will converting WebP to PNG lose quality?

No quality is lost in the conversion itself — PNG is lossless, so the PNG holds exactly the pixels the WebP decodes to. It cannot add back detail that a lossy WebP already discarded, but it will not remove any more.

Why is the PNG file bigger than the WebP?

WebP was designed to be small, and lossy WebP throws away detail you are unlikely to notice. PNG keeps every pixel exactly, which takes more space — often several times more for photos. For a smaller file, convert to JPG instead.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using its built-in image decoder and canvas. The file never leaves your device — you can check this in your browser's developer tools under the Network tab, where no request carries your file.

Can I convert many WebP files to PNG at once?

Yes. Add up to 50 files in one go, convert them together, and download them individually or all at once as a ZIP file.

Why do images I save from websites come out as WebP?

Most large websites serve WebP because it loads faster than JPG or PNG. When you right-click and save, the browser saves the format the site actually delivered, which is often WebP even when the page looks like it shows a normal photo.
