What is Edit PDF Metadata?

Edit PDF Metadata shows and changes a PDF's document properties — the Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator and Producer text plus the Creation and Modified dates. It is for the everyday tidy-up: a report whose title still says "Microsoft Word - draft", a scan with the wrong author, keywords left over from a template, or a file you are about to publish whose Producer advertises the software that made it.

Drop a PDF and its current values appear in the fields, ready to edit. Change what you want and click Apply; anything you leave alone keeps its value. Emptying a field clears that one entry, and ticking "Clear all metadata" empties all six text entries and removes both dates in one go. The edited file downloads as <name>-metadata.pdf, and your original is never changed.

What exactly is edited, and what is not, matters here. A PDF can carry metadata in more than one place, and this tool reads and writes only the standard document information dictionary — the /Info entries described in PDF 32000-1 §14.3.3 (Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, CreationDate, ModDate). Many files also carry an XMP metadata packet: an XML description defined by ISO 16684-1 that often repeats the same title and author. XMP is stored in a metadata stream, not in /Info, and this tool does not read, change or remove it. Nor does it touch metadata kept anywhere else in the file. So editing here updates the properties most readers show in their Document Properties box; it is not a way to strip every piece of identifying information from a PDF.

Clearing deserves the same plainness. "Clear all metadata" writes empty values into the /Info entries and removes the two date entries — it does not scrub the old text out of the file's bytes, and a tool that inspects the raw file could still find traces. Some PDF writers also add their own Producer string whenever a document is opened and saved, so an app that re-saves this file may put a Producer back after you cleared it. Treat clearing as an edit that blanks the visible properties, not as a guarantee that the information is gone.

The edit changes only /Info, so page content, page sizes, bookmarks, links and form fields are kept as they were. The whole file is re-saved, though, so a digital signature that covered the original bytes will no longer validate. Password-protected and permission-locked PDFs are refused with a clear message, because the library used here cannot decrypt them; files up to 200 MB are accepted. Everything runs in your browser with pdf-lib — your PDF is not uploaded, and you can confirm in your browser's developer tools (Network tab) that no request carries the file.

1. The file's first bytes are checked for the PDF signature, then pdf-lib opens it with metadata updating switched off, so the library itself does not stamp the file; encrypted and damaged files are refused with a specific message. 2. The eight /Info entries are read with pdf-lib's getters and shown in the fields; an entry that is missing — or stored as something that is not a string — reads as blank rather than failing the read. 3. A date you type is normalised to the PDF date form D:YYYYMMDDHHmmSS in UTC. "2026-01-15" becomes D:20260115000000Z and "2026-01-15 14:30" becomes D:20260115143000Z — the trailing Z is the UTC designator pdf-lib writes; a value typed with an offset is first converted to UTC. Text that is not a real date is refused with a message naming the accepted forms, before the file is touched. 4. Keywords are split on commas and whitespace, trimmed, and de-duplicated without regard to case; the PDF stores them as one space-separated string. 5. Apply writes the fields you changed (or empties them all if Clear all metadata is ticked), re-saves the document and offers <name>-metadata.pdf. Nothing outside the /Info dictionary is altered.

Worked examples

  • A report whose /Info holds a title, author, subject, keywords, creator and producer plus both dates shows "8 of 8 fields set", with the Creation date reading 2026-01-15 14:30 (UTC).
  • On Q3 report.pdf, set Title "Q3 Report", Author "Grace Hopper" and Keywords "pdf, tools, pdf" → Q3 report-metadata.pdf with the keywords stored as "pdf tools" and the old Producer kept.
  • Tick "Clear all metadata" on a file with all eight fields set → all six text entries become empty and both date entries are removed, so the saved file reads "0 of 8 fields set" — though the old text may still exist elsewhere in the bytes.
  • Type "2026-01-15 14:30" into Creation date → it is written as D:20260115143000Z (UTC), so the moment is the same in every timezone.
  • "2026-02-30" is refused: "2026-02-30" is not a real date — check the month, day and time. Use a date like 2026-01-15. February 2026 has 28 days, and the tool refuses an impossible day rather than silently rolling it into March.
  • "next tuesday" is refused with a message listing the accepted forms (2026-01-15 or 2026-01-15 14:30), before any bytes are read.
  • A JPG saved with a .pdf name is refused as "actually a JPG file, not PDF", so a wrong-format file points you at the right tool.

How to use Edit PDF Metadata

  1. Click "Choose a PDF" or drop a PDF onto the box. Its current metadata appears in the fields.
  2. Edit any of the six text properties, or retype a date as 2026-01-15 or 2026-01-15 14:30 (UTC). Leave a field as it is to keep it; empty it to clear just that entry.
  3. To blank everything at once, tick "Clear all metadata" — the fields grey out because all six text entries will be emptied and both dates removed.
  4. Click "Apply", then "Download" to save <name>-metadata.pdf. Your original file is untouched.

Common errors

  • "next tuesday" is not a date this tool understands. Type a date like 2026-01-15 or 2026-01-15 14:30, or leave the field empty to remove that date. — type the date as YYYY-MM-DD, optionally followed by a time, or clear the field.
  • "2026-02-30" is not a real date — check the month, day and time. Use a date like 2026-01-15. — the shape was right but the day does not exist in that month; correct it rather than expecting a roll-over.
  • "scan.pdf" is actually a JPG file, not PDF. The extension does not match the contents — use a JPG tool for this file. — the file's bytes are an image, whatever the name says.
  • "locked.pdf" is encrypted (password-protected or locked against editing), so its metadata cannot be read or changed. Open it in a PDF reader, save or print an unprotected copy, and use that. — the tool cannot decrypt the file, so it refuses it; re-save an unprotected copy first.
  • "report.pdf" is 250.00 MB, over the 200.00 MB limit for this tool. Everything runs in your browser's memory, so very large files can crash the tab. — compress or split the PDF first, or strip its images down.
  • The author came back after I saved in another app — that app wrote its own metadata, and possibly its own Producer string, when it re-saved the file. Clear or edit again in that app, or edit last.
  • A digital signature stopped validating — any change to a signed PDF breaks the signature, because it covered the original bytes. Keep a signed copy if you need the signature to hold.

FAQ

How do I edit the title and author of a PDF?

Drop the PDF here, type the new Title and Author in the fields, and click Apply. The values are written into the PDF's standard document information dictionary (/Info) and the edited file downloads as <name>-metadata.pdf. Nothing is uploaded.

Does this remove all metadata from a PDF?

No. It edits the /Info dictionary — Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer and the two dates. XMP metadata (the XML packet some applications add) and metadata stored elsewhere in the file are not changed. Clearing blanks the /Info entries; it does not scrub the old bytes, and another app that re-saves the file may add a Producer back.

What is the difference between the /Info dictionary and XMP?

The /Info dictionary is the set of short entries defined in PDF 32000-1 §14.3.3 that readers show in Document Properties. XMP is a separate XML description defined by ISO 16684-1, often repeating the same title and author, stored in a metadata stream. This tool reads and writes /Info only and leaves XMP untouched.

How do I clear a PDF's metadata?

Tick "Clear all metadata" and click Apply. All six text entries are set to empty and the Creation and Modified dates are removed. It blanks those visible properties rather than deleting the underlying text from the file, so it is not a way to guarantee confidential strings are gone.

Can I set a date on a PDF?

Yes. Type a date as 2026-01-15, or with a time as 2026-01-15 14:30, in the Creation date or Modified date field. It is stored in the PDF's date form (D:YYYYMMDDHHmmSS) in UTC — with the trailing Z designator pdf-lib writes — so the moment is the same in every timezone. Leave a date field empty to remove that date.

Will editing metadata change how my PDF looks?

No. Only the /Info entries change, so page content, page sizes, bookmarks, links and form fields are untouched. The file is re-saved, though, so a digital signature that covered the original bytes will no longer validate.

Is it safe to edit a confidential PDF here?

Yes. The file is read, edited and re-saved inside your browser tab with pdf-lib; it is not uploaded. You can confirm in your browser's developer tools (Network tab) that no request contains your document.

Is there a file size limit?

Files up to 200 MB are accepted. Everything runs in your device's memory, and the limit keeps the browser tab from running out of it. Encrypted or password-protected PDFs are refused, because they cannot be decrypted here.

Methodology

The document information dictionary (/Info) is read with pdf-lib's typed getters and written with its setters. Dates are normalised to the PDF date form D:YYYYMMDDHHmmSS, stored in UTC with the Z designator pdf-lib writes; a value typed without a timezone is read as UTC, and one with an offset is converted to UTC. Keywords are stored space-separated, as the format requires, after being split, trimmed and de-duplicated. Clearing writes empty values into the six text entries and removes the CreationDate and ModDate keys — it is an edit, not a secure erase: the previous text can remain elsewhere in the file, and some writers add a Producer string when the file is next saved. XMP metadata and any metadata outside /Info are neither read nor changed. Because the whole file is re-saved, its internal layout can differ and a digital signature stops validating. Encrypted PDFs are refused.
