What is Remove PDF Pages?
Remove PDF Pages deletes the pages you name from a PDF and keeps every other page, in the order it already had. It is for the everyday jobs that a full PDF editor makes feel heavy: dropping a blank scan that got mixed into a contract, taking a page of internal notes out before sending a report, cutting an out-of-date price sheet out of a catalogue, or removing a page you scanned twice. Type the page numbers, click once, and download a copy without them; your original file is never changed.
Page numbers start at 1, the way every PDF viewer counts, and the box accepts the same list a print dialog does: single pages (4), ranges (2-6) and open ranges (8- for page 8 to the end), separated by commas. As soon as you choose a file the tool reads it and shows how many pages it has, so you always know which numbers are valid. A list that repeats itself or overlaps — 3, 1-2, 2 — is fine: each page is deleted once, and a page is never counted twice. The tool refuses a list that would remove every page, because a PDF has to keep at least one, and it refuses page numbers that do not exist rather than quietly ignoring them.
This tool edits your PDF in place rather than rebuilding it, which is what makes it more careful than a plain extract-and-reassemble. Every page that stays keeps the exact object it had, so links that jump between kept pages, bookmarks, the fillable form, page labels and the document properties all keep working untouched, and pages are never re-rendered or recompressed — text stays selectable and images keep their quality, size and rotation. The one thing that cannot survive is a destination that pointed at a page you deleted, so those are removed: a link annotation whose target is gone is dropped, a form button loses only the dead action, and a bookmark that jumped to a removed page loses its destination. The removed pages themselves are deleted from the file, not hidden behind it — the tool removes their content, so a deleted page is not recoverable from the downloaded PDF.
Split PDF, elsewhere on this site, already has a "Delete pages" mode over the same page-copy helpers, and if you are already there it will do this job. This page exists because "remove pages from a PDF" is its own task with its own ideas — and because the two tools behave differently on purpose: Split PDF copies the pages it keeps into a brand-new file, so bookmarks, form fields, page labels and document properties are not carried over, while this tool edits your document in place and keeps them. If you want to reorder pages, split one PDF into several, or extract pages into a new file, use Split PDF or Organize PDF instead.
Password-protected and permission-locked PDFs are refused with a clear message, because the library cannot decrypt them — open such a file with its password, save or print an unprotected copy, and remove pages from that. Files up to 200 MB are accepted; the whole file is held in memory, so the limit keeps the tab from running out of it. Because the file is re-saved, a digital signature that covered the original bytes stops validating. Your PDF is never uploaded: it is read, changed and handed back entirely inside your browser tab with pdf-lib, and you can confirm in your browser's developer tools (Network tab) that no request carries the file.
1. The file's first bytes are checked for the PDF signature — so an image renamed to .pdf is named as what it really is — then pdf-lib opens it with metadata updating switched off. An encrypted, damaged or empty file is refused with a specific message, and the page count is shown. 2. Your list is parsed by the shared page-range parser: single pages (4), ranges (2-6), open ranges (8-) and commas. Every number is checked against the page count, duplicates and overlaps are collapsed, and the surviving pages are simply the rest. 3. A list that leaves no page at all is refused, because a PDF must keep at least one page. Nothing has been changed at this point. 4. The chosen pages are removed from the document's page tree, highest number first so the lower indexes stay valid. The page objects that stay are the originals, so links, bookmarks, form fields, page labels and properties to surviving pages are untouched. 5. Every destination that pointed at a removed page is deleted: a link annotation with no target left is dropped, a form button loses only its action, a bookmark loses its destination, and a named destination whose target was removed is taken out of the catalog — so no link or bookmark is left pointing at a page that is not there. 6. Objects reachable from nothing — the removed pages, their content streams, and any font or image that only they used — are deleted from the file, so a removed page is not left behind as a hidden object. Objects a surviving page still needs are reachable and are kept. 7. The document is saved as compressed object streams and downloads as <name>-without-pages-2_4.pdf, with form field appearances left exactly as they were.

Worked examples
- Remove "2, 4-5" from a 6-page report.pdf → report-without-pages-2_4-5.pdf with the 3 pages that were not listed: 1, 3 and 6.
- Remove "3, 1-2, 2" from a 6-page PDF → the repeats and the overlap collapse, so pages 1, 2 and 3 are deleted once each: report-without-pages-1-3.pdf, leaving 4, 5 and 6.
- Remove "4" from a 6-page report.pdf → report-without-page-4.pdf with 5 pages: 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6.
- Remove "1-6" from a 6-page PDF → refused: "That removes all 6 pages — a PDF needs at least one page. Leave out at least one page number."
- Remove "9" from a 6-page PDF → refused: "Page 9 does not exist — this PDF has 6 pages."
- On a 4-page PDF whose first page links to page 3 and to page 2, remove page 2 → the link to page 3 still works and the link to page 2 is deleted.
- The same 4-page PDF with a bookmark to page 3 and a bookmark to page 2, remove page 2 → the bookmark to page 3 keeps its destination and the bookmark to page 2 loses its destination.
- The removed pages are deleted from the file rather than hidden: after removing pages 2, 4 and 5 from a 6-page PDF, the download has no unreferenced page objects and none of the removed pages' text.
How to use Remove PDF Pages
- Click "Choose a PDF" or drop a PDF onto the box. The page count appears next to the file name.
- In "Pages to remove", type the pages you want to delete, e.g. 2, 5-6 or 8- for page 8 to the end.
- Click "Remove pages". The button stays disabled until the file is open and the list is valid; the line under the box tells you what is wrong if it is not.
- Click "Download" to save <name>-without-pages-2_4.pdf. Your original file is not changed.
Common errors
- "scan.pdf" is actually a PNG file, not PDF. The extension does not match the contents — use a PNG tool for this file. — the bytes are an image whatever the name says. Check the real format, or re-export the file as a PDF.
- "broken.pdf" could not be read — the PDF is damaged or incomplete. Download it again, or open it in a PDF reader and save a fresh copy. — the file's structure is broken. A fresh copy usually fixes it.
- "locked.pdf" is encrypted (password-protected or locked against editing), so its pages cannot be copied. Open it in a PDF reader, save or print an unprotected copy, and use that. — this library cannot decrypt the file, so it refuses it rather than produce a broken copy.
- That removes all 6 pages — a PDF needs at least one page. Leave out at least one page number. — your list names every page. A PDF with no pages cannot be saved, so remove all but one.
- Page 9 does not exist — this PDF has 6 pages. — a number is higher than the page count shown next to the file name. Check the count and correct the list.
- Enter the pages to remove, for example "2, 5-6". — the box is empty or holds only commas. Type at least one page or range.
- "five" is not a page or range. Use numbers like 4, ranges like 2-6, or 8- for page 8 to the end. — the list holds something other than numbers, dashes and commas. Separate entries with commas.
- "5-2" runs backwards. Write the lower page first, like 2-5. — a range has the higher page first. Write the lower number first.
FAQ
How do I remove pages from a PDF?
Choose the PDF on this page, type the pages to delete in "Pages to remove" (for example 2, 5-6) and click "Remove pages". The pages are deleted in your browser and the PDF without them downloads as <name>-without-pages-2_4.pdf. Your original file on disk is not changed.
How do I delete several pages at once?
List them in one box: separate single pages and ranges with commas, like 2, 5-6, 9. An open range such as 8- removes page 8 to the last page. Repeats and overlaps are fine — a page is deleted once however many times you name it.
What happens to links and bookmarks that pointed at a page I removed?
Links, bookmarks and form buttons that point at a page that is still there keep working unchanged, because the kept pages are the originals. A destination that pointed at a removed page cannot survive, so it is deleted: a link annotation with no target left is dropped, a form button loses only its action, a bookmark loses its destination, and a named destination whose target was removed is taken out of the catalog. The result tells you how many such destinations were removed.
Are the removed pages really gone from the file?
Yes. The tool deletes the removed pages and their content from the file — it does not just hide them or stop them from displaying. After the destinations that pointed at them are cleaned up, nothing references them, so the pages and anything only they used are dropped when the PDF is saved, and none of their text or images remain in the download.
Should I use this or Split PDF's Delete pages mode?
Either deletes the pages you list and gives them the same kind of name. This tool edits your PDF in place, so bookmarks, form fields, page labels and document properties are kept; Split PDF rebuilds the file from the pages it keeps, so those document-level features are not carried over, but the same page also extracts pages, splits by ranges and splits every page. Choose this one when you only need to delete pages and want the rest of the document's structure to survive.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read, changed and saved inside your browser tab with pdf-lib; it is never sent to a server, and there is no upload step, API key or account. You can confirm in your browser's developer tools (Network tab) that no request carries your document.
Can I remove pages from a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. This library cannot decrypt protected PDFs, so they are refused with a message rather than turned into a broken file. Open the PDF with its password in a reader, save or print an unprotected copy, and remove pages from that.
Does removing pages reduce quality or change the other pages?
No. The pages that stay are copied exactly as they are, not re-rendered or recompressed, so text stays selectable and images keep their quality, and each page keeps its own size, crop box and rotation. You can check which pages survived by the page count and order in the result. The file is re-saved as a whole, though, so a digital signature that covered the original stops validating.
